What is a Swedish Massage?

The Swedish Massage is often referred to as a ‘classic massage.’ It was born many years ago and uses a combination of four different strokes:

  • Effleurage
  • Petrissage
  • Friction
  • Tapotement

Since its creation, it’s also been used to develop several other massage techniques. Promoting total relaxation by releasing tension, the Swedish Massage was designed to relieve stress and improve wellbeing. It can be used to target different areas of the body including:

  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Legs & feet
  • Head/scalp (available upon request)

However, treatments can be tailored to your individual needs and to treat a specific area of concern. Simply discuss any requirements with a member of our experienced Olive team prior to your appointment. This will allow us to provide you with the best possible experience and will ensure you reap the benefits of a Swedish Massage.

What are the benefits of a Swedish Massage?

Swedish Massages can provide a range of benefits, which can be both physical and mental.

Pain relief

If you’re seeking short-term pain relief a Swedish Massage could be your ideal solution. Not only do they alleviate tension and soothe muscles, but they also increase blood flow – a contributing factor to the healthy functioning of the heart and other vital organs.

Immune system boost

A Swedish Massage can also give your immune system a boost, this is achieved by reducing stress on the body and improving circulation. In addition to this they can also improve lymphatic flow.  This helps healthy nutrients navigate their way through the body whilst lowering metabolic waste.

 Headache treatment

Headaches and stress are often directly associated, this is because muscles become very tight and tense when experiencing stress. A Swedish Massage is a popular treatment method for this, as it relieves the tension and loosens these muscles.

Improved sleep

Swedish Massages are also great supporters of sleep, helping you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. They do this by increasing serotonin levels in the body, which contribute to your mood and make you feel calmer.

Improved flexibility and posture

On a more energised note, Swedish Massages help you to become more flexible and improve posture. This is achieved through lengthening muscles and loosening joints, which in turn makes movement smoother and much easier to execute. Poor posture can be a result of overworked muscles caused by repetitive strain. During a Swedish Massage, these muscles will be targeted in attempt to correct any imbalances.

What can you do to benefit even further from a Swedish Massage?

The treatment itself will provide many wonderful benefits, but if you really want to reap the maximum benefits of a Swedish Massage, we recommend that you stay well hydrated beforehand. Drinking water is extremely important, as it helps to eliminate any toxins the body releases during the treatment.

Although a Swedish Massage can be a wonderful one-off treat, the more regular you are able to have these treatments, ultimately the more you will benefit from them (every two weeks is ideal) – especially if you have a stressful job or lifestyle.
