What is back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons why UK adults visit the doctor’s office. If you’ve ever experienced back pain, then you’re not alone.

Pain in the area between the bottom of your ribs to the top of your legs is lower back pain. The severity of lower back pain ranges from mild to severe, depending on the individual. Approximately 80% of all UK adults will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.

What causes back pain?

Back pain is often caused by muscle strain from lifting heavy objects or physically demanding jobs.  It’s not always necessary to visit your doctor but we would recommend making sure that there are no underlying health conditions. Some serious health problems associated with back pain can include infection, a broken bone, and in rare cases cancer.

It’s usually difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of lower back pain. If serious causes are discarded, such as, the possibility of a slipped disk, fracture, or inflammation. You can usually guarantee that a simple strain is the cause.

The discomfort caused by less serious causes of lower back pain is not to be underestimated. Healing can take a couple of weeks and often mobility is affected. Making it more difficult to carry out day to day tasks.

Why sports massage?

Back pain is described as feeling ‘tight’. The reason for this is that when you injure a muscle with a strain, your body will try replacing it with scar tissue. The problem with scar tissue is that if it stays in a shortened state it can lead to ‘tight’ muscles.

Sports massage is perfect for stretching and manipulating soft tissues of the body to treat the ‘tightness’ caused by lower back pain.

For targeted pain in the lower back we recommend a sports massage over deep tissue massage as the sports massage techniques used to treat sporting injuries are purposely made to target and heal specific areas of the body.

Some of the great health benefits associated with sports massage include:

  • Increased mobility
  • Improved soft tissue injury healing
  • Reduced muscle pain and stiffness
  • Improved circulation
  • Stress relief
  • Relaxation
