What is Cupping Therapy?

Our Cupping Therapy in Leeds is a form of holistic therapy that originates from the ancient Chinese tradition of placing heated suction cups on the body to stimulate blood flow and remove toxins. The cups are left on the body for five to fifteen minutes and treatment lasts for around an hour as the team at Olive Massage incorporates Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage techniques into the session.

We place a small amount of oil onto the body before placing the suction cups, this allows us to glide the cups around the surface of the skin to reach anywhere where there’s muscle tightness. The skin under the cups will redden underneath the suction force as your muscles receive a deep and invigorating massage.

You can expect the rim of the suction cups to leave temporary soreness and bruising on the body for 5-10 days after treatment.

What are the benefits of cupping?

The main benefit of myofascial cupping therapy is its ability to draw out any toxins in the body. It also has several other health benefits including:

  • Muscle pain relief

Cupping is a natural and holistic way to relieve muscle pain. It can also prevent further injury and muscle strains.

  • Reduced cellulite

Visibly reduce the appearance of cellulite anywhere on the body as cupping therapy can remove fluid build-up and break down the layers of fat affected by cellulite.

  • Improved digestion

Cupping can ease bloating and relax your stomach muscles. Relaxing your stomach muscles aids digestion and improves stomach problems.

  • Reduced muscle spasms

If you suffer from muscle spasms, then cupping will keep the muscles loose, improve blood flow to the area, and decrease any cramping.

  • Improved swelling

Cupping unblocks the lymphatic system by removing any fluid build up that causes swelling.

  • Stress relief and improved mood

Cupping increases positive hormones such as serotonin and endorphins, leaving you feeling fantastic for hours afterwards.

How to recover from cupping:

Things to do: Drink plenty of water as this will help to flush out any toxins released by the treatment, allow plenty of rest time to allow your muscles to recover, and moisturise any red marks left behind from the suction cups.

Things to avoid: Caffeine & alcohol will dehydrate you which can slow down the body’s healing process, hot showers may feel uncomfortable on suction cup marks, and intense exercise will not allow the body to recover as efficiently.

If you’re scared of needles, cups are the perfect alternative to acupuncture and come with many of the same holistic massage benefits.
