Can Massage Improve Cellulite

Here at Olive Massage, we’re often asked if Massage Therapy can be used to improve Cellulite. If you suffer from Cellulite and find yourself also asking this question, continue reading to learn more…

What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a common skin condition which effects many people across the world. When suffering from Cellulite skin will appear dimpled and may feel bumpy. Generally, cellulite is more common amongst females, usually effecting the thighs and hips – however, it can also affect other areas. It’s important to note that people of all different ages, shapes and sizes can develop Cellulite. In some cases, Cellulite can even be a genetic condition and run through families.

What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite appears when fat is unevenly distributed below the skin and muscles tighten irregularly. This pushes fat cells against connective tissue, causing the skin’s surface to appear bumpy and dimpled.  Hormones can also play a role in Cellulite and some people are just naturally more susceptible to developing cellulite.

The Ways in Which Massage Can Improve Cellulite:

Massages won’t eliminate Cellulite entirely; however, they can minimise the effects and make Cellulite appear less visible. When massages are carried out, skin and muscles are manipulated and moved around which increases blood circulation and lymph flow. This helps to flush out any unwanted toxins and can make skin appear visibly plumper which makes bumps less obvious.

Are Certain Treatments Better at Treating Cellulite Than Others?

Common massages such as Swedish or Deep Tissue can help to improve cellulite, but some are more effective than others. If you’re looking for a treatment that will really maximise the results, we recommend the following two options…

Manual Lymphatic Drainage:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised treatment that encourages efficient removal of excess fluid and other harmful by-products. MLD massages offer a relaxing experience and are painless due to the lack of pressure required. When a MLD massage is taking place, trapped fluid moves to the skin’s surface and this makes it appear smoother. Not only does MLD improve the effects of cellulite, but it also offers various additional benefits to your overall wellness.

Cupping Therapy:

Cupping Therapy is becoming an increasingly popular treatment and can efficiently reduce the effects of cellulite. During Cupping Therapy, plastic cups are used on the skin to create suction and stimulate blood flow within the targeted area. This makes the skin appear more even and reduces the appearance of cellulite.

However, the effects on Cellulite will be temporary and treatments will need to be done regularly to prolong the effects. It will require multiple appointments for the effects to become noticeable, so you may need to persevere and be patient.

Conclusion – Can Massage Improve Cellulite?

Unfortunately, massages cannot completely cure Cellulite and should not be used as a stand-alone treatment method. However, massages can reduce the effects of Cellulite by making the skin appear smoother and less bumpy. For the majority of people Cellulite isn’t a medical condition and the appearance is what bothers people the most. If this is the case, adding regular massages to your wellness routine could be extremely beneficial. Not to mention the additional health benefits massages can offer too!
