Why you need to try aromatherapy

From reducing stress and anxiety to helping soothe cold symptoms, here’s the reasons we think you should try aromatherapy.

Essential oils have been used for nearly 6,000 years, with the aim of improving a person’s health or mood. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) defines aromatherapy as “the therapeutic application or the medicinal use of aromatic substances (essential oils) for holistic healing.”

A range of essential oils have been found to have various degrees of antimicrobial activity and are believed to have antiviral, nematicidal, antifungal, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties. Aromatherapy applications include massage, topical applications, and inhalation.

Aromatherapy is incredibly powerful and the right scents can help the body and mind relax and de-stress. Lavender and ylang ylang are both known for their de-stressing properties. Using the oils within an aromatherapy massage is a great way to help relieve stress.

People with insomnia are often encouraged to try aromatherapy. Relaxing scents can form part of a wind-down routine to help prepare both body and mind for a restful sleep. Try burning a relaxing scent or incorporating essential oils in your evening bath.

We’re mid way through winter now and the dreaded winter cold is doing the rounds. Menthol and eucalyptus oils can help clear blocked airways when inhaled, helping to ease congestion and improve symptoms of cold and flu. Try adding a few drops to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam.
