The Amazing Psychological Benefits of Massage

By December 7, 2022News

When booking a massage it’s common to book your appointment in search of physical pain relief but many often overlook the power that massage has on their neurotransmitters. Massage triggers oxytocin aka “the love hormone” and can lead you to feel emotionally safe, secure, and soothed.

Massage slows down the pace of your nervous system. It is one of the most natural ways to release happy hormones in your body.

Taking time out of your busy schedule for a massage is a great way to end a super stressful day. It can help you to reconnect with your feelings of safety, security, and calm.

Some of the amazing psychological benefits of massage include:

  1. Increased levels of dopamine and serotonin

Massage releases happy hormones in the body such as dopamine and serotonin, which help to lower negative emotions. Chemical imbalances in your body can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. This is why it’s so important to find ways to boost your happy hormones. Your mood can affect every aspect of your life such as your ability to sleep, eat, and digest which is why it’s important to find ways to ensure your body has enough happy hormones to keep yourself functioning properly.

  1. Emotional pain relief

Massage is not just good for your body, it’s also a powerful pain reliever and can temporarily relieve you from emotional distress. It can increase the levels of compassion that you have for yourself and will allow you to remove any feelings of immediate threat or danger. Massage lowers overactivity of the mind and gives you time to focus on reconnecting with your body. Holistic massage such as Swedish Massage or Indian Head Massage is specifically used for treating every single aspect of your well-being – physically and mentally.

  1. Lowered stress hormones

Massage has the power to lower stress hormones such as Cortisol. Lower stress hormones mean reduced blood pressure, lowered heart rate, as well as higher quantities of white blood cells. Having lower stress levels can ease anxiety, depression, and improve your memory. One in fourteen UK adults feel stressed every day, making stress one of the biggest causes of poor mental health.

We live in an era of constant digital communication, and this has massively increased our stress levels and negatively impacted our emotional well-being. Digital communication keeps us in a constant search for information and often means that we aren’t fully aware of our surroundings.  Massage is perfect for allowing you to reconnect with your mind, body, and spirit, and provide you with temporary relief from the stresses of day-to-day life.

I like that you pointed out how massage could release happy hormones in the body such as dopamine and serotonin, which could help lower negative emotions. I’ve been feeling quite tired lately and I just want to rest and relax on my next day off. So with that in mind, I am thinking of getting a massage from a spa.
